*Note: The term "tengu" (天狗) in Japanese refers to a legendary goblin famous in Japanese literature. As my students learned in our FIrst Year seminar, the famous U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry was sometimes represented as a "Tengu" goblin in popular woodblock prints that circulated widely after is first visit to Japan.

One familiar social media that I have used regularly is Facebook, a site that allows the students to post images and videos for their "friends" to view. In my classes, students have been able to take advantage of the Facebook social tools to present their work and initiate relaxed discussions about each other's work.

Pictured below, for example, are screenshots from a Facebook Site, entitled "Tengu Perry 1,"* that I created for my Fall 2012 First Year Seminar on "Representations of East and West." Building this site ultimately created a unique opportunity to "FLIP" the class. Students were able to share their research findings with multimedia presentations, invite feedback, and thus better prepare themselves to discuss each other's work by the time we arrived in class.
